CHAPTER 17

Tears blurred her vision,

dropping onto the old paper,

smudging the ink of her father's final confession.

All those years of hatred,

all the bitterness she threw at Jack,

was built on a beautiful lie designed to protect her.

"He lied to save my memory of my father,"

she whispered,

her voice trembling with a mixture of grief and profound revelation.

Thomas looked at her with sympathy,

knowing how much her father meant to her,

but he knew they had no time for tears.

"Megan,

Vance's men have Jack,"

Thomas said gently,

checking his tablet for security updates.

"They didn't kill him at the cabin;

they took him to Vance's private estate outside Austin."

"They want the drive,

and they will torture him until he gives up its location,"

he added,

looking at her for direction.

Megan wiped her tears away,

a sudden,

furious fire igniting within her soul,

replacing her despair with cold resolve.

She was no longer the victim of a cheating husband or a corrupt system;

she was the head of Walker Holdings,

and she was going to end this.

"Get the car ready,"

she ordered,

standing up straight,

her voice commands sharp and unyielding.

"We are going to Vance's estate,

and we are bringing the ledger with us."

Lily woke up,

having overheard the last part of the conversation,

her eyes wide with fear but filled with a new determination.

"I'm coming with you,"

Lily insisted,

standing beside Megan,

refusing to be left behind again.

"It's too dangerous,

Lily,"

Megan tried to argue,

wanting to keep her safe from the violence.

"He is my father,

Megan,"

Lily countered,

her voice strong and unwavering,

"he risked his life for me tonight,

and I won't abandon him."

Megan looked at the young woman,

seeing the same fierce loyalty that Jack had shown,

and realized she couldn't stop her.

"Fine,"

Megan agreed,

May you like

clutching the flash drive tightly,

"let's go bring him home."
