CHAPTER 11

Megan did not sleep that night,

instead spending the hours analyzing old corporate documents,

searching for any mention of Julian Vance.

The morning sun finally broke through the curtains,

casting long,

golden shadows across the desk,

but she felt no warmth.

Her phone rang again,

and this time,

the name on the screen made her breath catch in her throat.

Jack.

She hesitated,

her finger hovering over the red button,

tempted to block him out forever.

But curiosity,

mixed with a strange sense of urgency,

forced her to swipe green.

"What do you want,

Jack?"

she asked,

her voice lacking any emotion,

a cold wall of indifference.

"Megan,

please,

just listen to me,"

he pleaded,

sounding breathless,

as if he had been running.

"You are in danger,

and so is Lily."

Megan scoffed,

leaning back in her chair,

refusing to believe his words easily.

"Is this another one of your games,

Jack,

another lie to get close to us?"

"No,"

he yelled,

his voice cracking with genuine panic,

"Julian Vance is looking for a ledger."

"A ledger that contains proof of his illegal investments,

and Marcus has the other half of the key."

Megan froze,

the puzzle pieces suddenly falling into place,

confirming her fears about Vance's sudden appearance.

"Where is this ledger,

Jack?"

she demanded,

her skepticism melting into cold reality.

"I hid it in the old cabin,

the one by the lake,

under the floorboards of the study,"

he explained quickly.

"You need to get it before they do,

or they will destroy Walker Holdings to find it."

"Why didn't you give it to the police?"

she asked,

frustrated by his constant secrecy.

"Because it contains names of people high up in the government,

people who would cover it up and make us disappear,"

he whispered.

"I kept it as leverage,

to protect you and Lily if things went wrong."

Megan disconnected the call,

not waiting to hear his excuses,

her mind already calculating her next move.

She couldn't trust Jack completely,

but she couldn't ignore the warning either,

not when Lily's safety was on the line.

She ordered her driver to head to the airport immediately,

canceling her meetings in New York,

and booking a private flight back to Texas.

The stakes had just gotten higher,

and she was flying straight into the eye of the storm.
