Chapter 11 - The School Parking Lot Showdown

Two weeks later, Lily was back at school. Her recovery had been miraculous. The constant, heavy pain that had weighed her down for months was gone, replaced by the bright, energetic laughter of a healthy fifteen-year-old girl.
I was waiting in my car in the school parking lot to pick her up after her first day back.
Suddenly, I saw a black sedan pull up close to the school entrance. The door opened, and David stepped out. He looked disheveled, his expensive suit wrinkled, his hair unwashed. He had lost his job at the accounting firm, and his face carried the desperate, manic energy of a man who had lost everything.
He walked straight toward Lily as she stepped out of the school doors with her friends.
“Lily!” David called out, reaching for her backpack. “Come with me. We need to talk. Your mother is lying to you.”
Lily froze, her face turning white with terror. She took a step back, her books spilling onto the asphalt.
Before David could reach her, the school’s resource officer, a large man named Deputy Davis, stepped between them, his hand resting on his taser. “Step back, sir! You are violating a restraining order!”
I threw my car door open and ran toward them, my heart in my throat. “Get away from her, David!”
David spun around, pointing a finger at me, his voice a wild, desperate scream. “This is your fault, Sarah! You ruined my life! You took my money, you took my house, and now you’re turning my daughter against me!”

“You did this to yourself, David!” I shouted, wrapping my arms around Lily and pulling her behind me. “You risked her life for twenty thousand dollars! You're a monster!”
The deputy didn't hesitate. He grabbed David’s arm, twisting it behind his back and forcing him onto the hood of the sedan as the school parking lot erupted into shouts and gasps from parents and students.
