Chapter 13 - The Night the Police Banged on His Door

Three months later, the final court hearing was scheduled.

David had been released on bail, staying in a cheap, run-down motel on the outskirts of the city. He had tried to file for bankruptcy to avoid paying the child support and medical bills, but the federal judge had denied his petition, citing the fraudulent nature of his debts.

At 2:00 AM, the local police department executed a felony arrest warrant at his motel room.

He had tried to flee through the back window, carrying a suitcase filled with cash he had managed to hide from his frozen accounts, but the officers were waiting for him in the alley.

He was dragged out of the motel in handcuffs, his face covered in dirt, his expensive business suit replaced by cheap, wrinkled sweatpants. The entire arrest was captured on the body cameras of the officers, a final, public humiliation for the man who had valued his appearance of wealth over his family's survival.

I watched the news report on my tablet the next morning, sitting at the kitchen table with Lily. She looked at the screen, then looked up at me, her eyes quiet and peaceful.

“Are we safe now, Mom?” she asked.

“We are completely safe, baby,” I said, kissing her cheek. “Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.”
