Chapter 14 - The Bitter Courtroom Showdown

The courtroom was silent as the judge, a stern-faced woman named Judge Henderson, took her seat.

David sat at the defense table, his head bowed, his hands shaking in his orange prison jumpsuit. His expensive lawyers were gone, replaced by a tired public defender who looked like he wanted to be anywhere else.

Clara Vance stood up, her voice ringing out clear and powerful as she delivered our final victim impact statement.

“Your Honor, this is not a case of a family struggling with medical debt,” Clara said, pointing a finger at David. “This is a case of a father who systematically, calculatedly chose to hide his daughter's life-threatening tumor to protect his own fraudulent financial schemes. He lied to his wife, he terrorized his daughter, and he risked her life for twenty thousand dollars. He deserves the maximum penalty the law allows.”

The judge nodded, her expression filled with a cold, righteous anger as she looked down at my husband.

“Mr. Carter,” Judge Henderson said, her voice like steel. “Your actions are a betrayal of the most sacred trust in human society—the protection of your own child. I sentence you to fifteen years in a state penitentiary, with no possibility of early parole.”

David collapsed onto the table, weeping silently as the bailiff led him away in handcuffs.

I stood up, holding Lily’s hand tightly in mine. We walked out of the courtroom, our heads held high, leaving the monster of our past behind us forever.
