Chapter 15 - A New Sunrise and the Warmth of a Healing Family

One year later, the Seattle sun was warm and bright, casting a golden light over our backyard in Bellevue.
The lawn was covered in white tables, filled with flowers, laughter, and the delicious scent of a summer barbecue. It was Lily’s sixteenth birthday party. She was running across the grass, her face bright and full of color, her laughter ringing out clear and healthy as she chased her friends around the pool.
She was healthy. She was happy. She was alive.
My father-in-law's sister, Aunt Margaret, who had stayed by our side through the entire legal battle, walked up to the porch and handed me a glass of iced tea.
“You did a wonderful job, Sarah,” Margaret said softly, looking at her grandniece. “You saved her.”
“We saved each other, Margaret,” I said, a tear of pure, overwhelming happiness slipping down my cheek.
Lily ran up the steps of the porch, wrapping her arms around my neck, her skin warm and smelling of summer. “I love you, Mom,” she whispered.

“I love you too, baby,” I said, holding her tight.
The storm had finally passed, the toxic lies of my husband were buried deep in the past, and in their place, we had built a life of pure truth, ultimate healing, and absolute freedom. We were finally home, we were finally safe, and we were finally free.
