Chapter 5 - The Confrontation That Broke My Marriage

David’s eyes darted to the papers in my hand, then back to my face. He took a slow step forward, his jaw clenching.

“Hospital?” he scoffed, trying to play it cool. “Sarah, you’re overreacting again. I took her to the doctor five weeks ago. It was just a minor stomach virus. They wanted to run a bunch of useless scans to pad their pockets. I told you, we can't afford to chase every little ache and pain.”

“It’s a teratoma, David,” I said, my voice rising as the anger finally broke through my composure. “It’s cutting off the blood supply to her ovary. If we had operated five weeks ago, it would have been a simple procedure. Now, she could lose her fertility. All because you stole forty-five thousand dollars from our savings to buy into a fake real estate scheme!”

David’s face flushed a deep, angry red. He lunged forward, grabbing my wrist, his grip painfully tight. “You have no right to go through my files! That was an investment for our future! I was trying to build something for us!”

“By letting our daughter rot from the inside out?” I screamed, pulling my arm back with all my strength. “You told her she was dramatic! You made her feel like she was a burden to this family! She was afraid to tell me she was in pain because she thought we would lose our house!”

“She is dramatic!” David roared, his eyes wild with fury. “She’s fifteen! Kids get stomach aches! I made a business decision, Sarah! You don't understand how the world works!”

“I understand that you are a monster,” I said, stepping back from him. “I am going to the hospital. I am signing the consent forms for her surgery. And when this is over, I am going to make sure you never see either of us again.”

“You can’t sign those forms without my consent!” David yelled as I grabbed my purse and keys from the counter. “I am her father! The insurance is in my name! If you do this, I will refuse to pay a single dime of the bill! You’ll be ruined, Sarah!”

“I’d rather be bankrupt than have a dead daughter,” I said, slamming the front door behind me.
