Chapter 6 - The Emergency Surgery and the Father's Arrogant Arrival

The pediatric surgery wing of Northwest Memorial Hospital was quiet at 6:00 AM.
I sat in the uncomfortable vinyl chair beside Lily’s bed, holding her hand as the pre-op nurse administered the IV fluids. Lily looked so small beneath the white hospital blankets, her face pale, her lips dry.
“Are you scared, Mom?” she whispered, her eyes searching mine.
“Not even a little bit, sweetie,” I lied, forcing a warm smile. “You have the best doctors in the state. In a few hours, this is all going to be over, and you’re going to feel so much better.”
The door to the pre-op room was pushed open.
David walked in, dressed in his expensive business suit, carrying himself with an air of absolute authority that made my stomach turn. He had two men in dark suits standing behind him in the hallway.
“David,” I said, standing up and blocking the bed. “You are not supposed to be here.”
“I am her father, Sarah,” David said, his voice loud and arrogant, filling the quiet room. “And as her primary insurance holder, I am officially withholding consent for this procedure. I’ve consulted with our legal team, and we are requesting a second opinion from an out-of-network specialist.”
Dr. Evans, who had just entered the room with a clipboard, stopped in his tracks. “Mr. Carter, your daughter's mass is on the verge of torsion. A second opinion will take days. She doesn't have days.”
“I don't care about your timelines, Doctor,” David sneered, stepping closer to the bed. “This hospital is trying to exploit a minor’s symptoms for financial gain. I am not authorizing the surgery.”
Lily began to cry, her shoulders shaking as she clutched the blanket to her chest. “Dad... please. It hurts so bad.”

“Be quiet, Lily,” David snapped, not even looking at her. “You're fine. You're just worked up because your mother has been feeding you drama.”
That was the exact moment I realized I was done playing by the rules.
