Chapter 4 - The Midnight Shadow in the Hallway

I sat on the floor of the office, surrounded by bank statements, my hands shaking as I traced the money trail.

The forty-five thousand dollars hadn't been spent on medical emergencies. It hadn't been spent on our mortgage or Lily’s education. Over the past six months, there had been a series of massive, wire transfers directly from our HSA and our joint savings account to an entity called Vanguard Holdings LLC.

I quickly pulled up my laptop and searched the state’s corporate registry for Vanguard Holdings.

The registered agent and sole owner of the LLC was David Carter.

He had drained our daughter's medical safety net to fund his own secret business venture—a high-risk commercial real estate speculation that, according to the tax documents I found in the same drawer, had completely collapsed three months ago. He was broke. He had lost everything, and instead of telling me, he had hidden the truth, choosing to risk our daughter’s life rather than admit his financial failure.

The front door of the house opened with a click.

“Sarah?” David’s voice called out from the foyer, sounding tired but casual. “Why are all the lights off? Where’s Lily? Her soccer coach called and said she missed practice.”

I slowly stood up from the floor, clutching the bank statements in my hand, and walked out into the dimly lit hallway.

David was standing by the coat rack, taking off his expensive wool coat. He looked up, his smile freezing when he saw the expression on my face and the papers in my hand.

“What are you doing in my office, Sarah?” he asked, his voice instantly losing its warmth, turning defensive and sharp.

“Lily is in the hospital, David,” I said, my voice dead and level. “She’s having emergency surgery tomorrow morning.”
