Chapter 9 - Uncovering Motives

"Why is she doing this now?"
I asked later,
handing Megan a cup of herbal tea.
"Why does she care so much about this baby?"
Megan looked into her cup,
the steam rising between us.
She swallowed hard.
"It's about the money,
Jake."
I frowned.
"What money?"
"Your grandfather's trust,"
she whispered.
"The one he set up before he passed away."
I stared at her,
confused.
"That trust only goes to my firstborn child when they turn eighteen."
"I don't control it."
"Linda doesn't control it."
"Exactly,"
Megan said,
looking up at me.
"But she told me that if we get divorced,
and she gets custody of the baby as a guardian,
she can manage the funds until he's of age."
"She owes a lot of money,
Jake."
"To people who aren't nice."
The pieces finally clicked into place.
It wasn't about love.
It wasn't even about controlling me.
It was about a payday.
My mother was drowning in debt,
and she saw our unborn child as her life raft.
"She's insane,"
I muttered,
May you like
rubbing my face.
"She's completely lost her mind."
