Chapter 19 - The Shield of Love

Weeks turned into months.
We officially broke our lease on the Pilsen apartment.
I hired movers to pack our things,
ensuring I was there the entire time.
Linda never showed up.
She had hired her own lawyer,
but they quickly realized they had no case.
The medical evidence was too strong.
The threat to her financial stability was too real if she went to trial.
We found a new place,
a small house with a yard in the suburbs.
Far away from the city noise.
Far away from the silver sedan.
The nursery was finally completed.
The crib was assembled,
painted a soft green.
The baby clothes were washed and folded.
Every night,
I still kissed Megan's forehead before bed.
But the fear didn't follow us into the dark anymore.
We had built a wall of love around our family,
one that no monster could breach.
"He's going to be here soon,"
Megan whispered one night,
staring at the ceiling.
"I know,"
I smiled.
"Are you ready?"
"Yes,"
she said,
May you like
turning to face me.
"Because I have you."
