Chapter 15 - The Trap Springs

I returned to the motel,
feeling lighter than I had in days.
But as I turned into the parking lot,
my stomach dropped.
A familiar silver sedan was parked near the office.
My heart began to race.
How had she found us?
I parked my car quickly,
running toward Room 114.
The door was closed,
but I could hear voices inside.
Shouting.
I slammed my shoulder against the door,
forgetting the key card.
It didn't budge.
I frantically swiped the card,
the light turning green.
I burst inside.
My mother was standing over Megan,
who was cowering against the headboard.
Linda was holding a folder of papers.
"You think you can run from me?"
Linda hissed,
not even looking at me as I entered.
"I saw your bank statement,
Jake."
"You used your debit card at the gas station down the highway."
"You always were careless."
I grabbed Linda's arm,
pulling her away from the bed.
"Get away from her!"
I yelled.
"Get out before I kill you!"
She laughed,
a sharp,
ugly sound.
"You won't do anything,
May you like
Jake."
"You're too weak."
