Chapter 11 - The Midnight Drive

The rain started just as we reached the street.

It was a heavy,

cold summer rain that blurred the city lights.

I hailed a cab,

telling the driver to just head north toward the expressway.

"Don't stop until I tell you,"

I added,

sliding a fifty-dollar bill through the partition.

The driver nodded,

turning up the radio.

The sound of jazz music filled the car,

contrasting sharply with our panic.

I looked out the back window.

The street was dark,

the silver sedan nowhere to be seen.

But I didn't feel relieved.

I knew she would discover we were gone soon.

She would call Frank.

She would try to enter the apartment.

Megan leaned her head against my shoulder,

her eyes closed.

"We're safe,"

I whispered into her hair.

"I've got you."

She didn't respond,

but her grip on my arm tightened.

We drove past the glittering skyscrapers of downtown,

leaving the familiar streets behind.

I watched the digital clock on the dashboard.

1:14 AM.

We were running away from the only home we knew,

all because of the woman who was supposed to love me unconditionally.
