Chapter 1 - The Monster in the Room

The air in the bedroom grew ice cold
and my breath hitched in my throat
as I stared at the deep purple marks
which covered my wife's pale legs
like a cruel mapping of torment.
My mother gasped loudly
stepping back with a hand pressed to her chest
as if she were the victim of this horror.
"Oh my goodness
Jake
what happened to her?"
Her voice trembled with perfect theater
but I could see the truth in her eyes
which gleamed with a twisted satisfaction.
Megan pulled her knees to her chest
crying silently
as she tried to grab the blue blanket back
but my hands were frozen in place.
"Who did this to you
Megan?"
I asked
my voice cracking with a mixture of rage and terror
while my heart hammered against my ribs.
She didn't look at me
instead
her terrified gaze was locked onto my mother
who stood right behind me.
"Tell him
Megan,"
my mother urged
her voice dripping with fake sympathy
"tell my son who did this horrible thing to you."
The manipulation was so thick
it made me sick to my stomach
because I finally saw through the mask
that my mother had worn for my entire life.
The small apartment felt like a trap
the walls closing in on us
as the silence stretched out.
I looked at the bruises again
noticing the shape of fingers gripped tightly
and the scrape marks that could only come from a struggle.
My mother took another step back
toward the bedroom door
as if she wanted to escape the scene of the crime.
"Maybe we should call an ambulance
Jake
or the police,"
she whispered
trying to sound helpful
but her hands were shaking.
"No police,"
Megan suddenly screamed
her voice raw with pure panic
as she clutched her pregnant belly.
"Please
Jake
no police."
I looked between my wife and my mother
realizing that the nightmare was just beginning
and the person I trusted most
was the one who had broken my family.
I stood up slowly
my body rigid with anger
as I turned to face my mother
demanding answers that she would never give willingly.
She looked at me with innocent eyes
but the shadow of her guilt was cast long across the room.
"Get out,"
I whispered
my voice low and dangerous
lethal enough to cut through her lies.
"Jake
I'm your mother
I came here to help you,"
she pleaded
stepping closer again.
"Get out of my house right now,"
I roared
and the walls seemed to shake with my fury.
She blinked
shocked by my tone
then her expression hardened into something cold and familiar.
Without another word
she turned around
and walked out of the apartment
slamming the front door behind her.
I sank to my knees beside the bed
tears blurring my vision
as I reached out for Megan.
She finally let go of her breath
sobbing uncontrollably
as she threw her arms around my neck.
"I'm sorry
Jake
I'm so sorry,"
she wept into my shoulder.
"It's okay
sweetheart
I'm here now
and she can't hurt you anymore."
But as I held her tight
looking at the empty doorway
I knew that my mother would not stop here.
She had planted the seeds of doubt
May you like
and now
she was going to harvest the destruction.
