Chapter 18 - The Breath of Life

The ride back to the hospital in the police cruiser was a blur of flashing lights and radio chatter.
Detective Miller kept his hand on the wheel
his voice calm as he coordinated the search for my mother and her guards.
"The state police found the wrecked SUV
Jake,"
he reported
looking at me through the rearview mirror.
"Your mother was still inside
unable to walk due to a broken leg from the crash."
"She's currently under arrest and being transported to a secure medical unit in Chicago."
The news felt distant
unimportant compared to the fate of my wife and child.
We arrived at the hospital ten minutes later
the emergency lights still painting the brick building in shades of blue.
I ran through the sliding doors
bypassing the reception desk and sprinting up the stairs to the surgical unit.
The double doors were open now
the chaotic energy of the night replaced by a quiet
serene peace.
Dr. Reynolds was standing at the nurse's station
writing on a chart as I approached him
soaked in sweat and covered in dirt.
"Doctor
Megan... the baby..."
I managed to say
my voice trembling with a terrifying anticipation.
He looked up
and a warm
genuine smile spread across his face
extinguishing the last of my fears.
"They are both fine
Jake
it's a miracle,"
he said softly
placing a hand on my shoulder.
"Your wife was incredibly strong
and we managed to stabilize her before any permanent damage occurred."
"You have a healthy baby boy."
The tears finally came
hot and uncontrolled
washing away the grime and terror of the longest night of my life.
"Can I see them?"
I choked out.
"Yes
she's in the recovery room
waiting for you."
I walked down the quiet corridor
my boots squeaking softly against the clean floor
until I reached Room 204.
I pushed the door open gently
the dim light revealing Megan sitting up in bed
looking exhausted but radiantly beautiful.
In her arms
wrapped in a small white blanket
was a tiny
breathing bundle of life.
She looked up as I entered
her eyes filling with tears of joy.
"Jake
you're alive,"
she whispered
reaching her free hand out to me.
I fell to my knees beside the bed
kissing her forehead and then her lips
holding her as if she were the most precious thing in the universe.
"I'm here
sweetheart
I'm never leaving you again,"
I wept
looking down at our son.
He had a tuft of dark hair and tiny
perfect fingers that curled around my pinky finger when I touched his hand.
"We named him after your uncle
Liam,"
Megan said softly
her thumb stroking the baby's cheek.
"The man who gave us the cabin that saved our lives."
"He's perfect
Megan
completely perfect."
As the sun began to rise over the Wisconsin lake outside our window
casting a warm
golden glow across the room
I knew that the nightmare was finally over.
The bruises would heal
May you like
the legal battles would be won
and our family would grow in the light of a new beginning.
