Chapter 17 - The Arrival of Justice

The police cruisers pulled into the parking lot two minutes later.
Two officers entered the room,
their hands on their holsters.
I explained the situation,
showing them the emergency restraining order application that Sarah had filed.
I showed them the photos of Megan's bruises.
One officer went after Linda's car,
while the other stayed to take our statement.
Megan was shaking,
but she managed to speak clearly.
She told the officer exactly what Linda had done in our apartment.
The officer wrote it all down,
his face sympathetic.
"We'll put out an alert for her vehicle,"
he said.
"If she comes near you again,
she will be arrested immediately."
When they left,
the room felt empty,
but the air felt cleaner.
The shadow had finally been exposed to the light.
I sat on the bed,
pulling Megan into my arms.
She buried her face in my neck,
her tears soaking my shirt.
"It's over,"
I whispered.
"The law is on our side now."
She nodded,
her grip loosening slightly.
