Chapter 16 - Confrontation at Dawn

"I'm not weak anymore,"
I said,
stepping between her and Megan.
"I know about the trust fund,

Her face twisted into something truly monstrous.
"That money belongs to this family!"
she shrieked.
"Not to some girl from the suburbs!"
"I raised you!"
"You owe me!"
"I don't owe you anything,"
I said,
my voice steady now.
"You hurt my wife."
"You threatened my child."
"You are no mother to me."
She stepped closer,
her fingers clawing at the air.
"You think a piece of paper will stop me?"
"I will ruin you,
Jake."
"I will tell everyone what a terrible son you are."
"Go ahead,"
I said,
taking out my phone.
"The police are already on their way."
"I called them when I saw your car."
She paused,
her eyes darting toward the window.
The distant sound of sirens began to echo from the highway.
She realized she had run out of time.
She pointed a finger at Megan.
"This isn't over,"
she whispered.

Then she turned and walked out,
leaving the door wide open.
