Chapter 14 - The Midnight Threat

The hours crawled by like a slow torture

the silence of the room filled only by the rhythmic ticking of the wall clock.

Megan woke up around three

her face tight with a sudden pain.

"Jake

it hurts,"

she gasped

holding her stomach tightly.

I panicked

jumping out of the chair and pressing the nurse call button repeatedly.

"What hurts

Megan? Is it the baby?"

"I don't know

it's a sharp pain in my lower abdomen,"

she cried

tears springing to her eyes.

Within seconds

a team of nurses and Dr. Reynolds burst into the room.

"What's happening?"

the doctor demanded

moving quickly to her side.

"She's having severe abdominal pain

Doctor,"

I explained

my voice shaking with terror.

He began to examine her

his expression turning serious as he looked at the monitors.

"Her blood pressure is spiking

and the baby's heart rate is dropping,"

he announced grimly.

"The stress might be inducing early labor

or worse

a placental abruption from the physical trauma."

"We need to get her to the operating room for an emergency C-section right now."

The room erupted into chaos as the nurses began to disconnect the monitors and wheel the bed out.

"Jake!"

Megan screamed

stretching her hand out to me as they rushed her down the hallway.

"I'm right here

I'm coming with you!"

I yelled

running alongside the gurney.

But as we reached the double doors of the surgical unit

a nurse stopped me.

"You can't come in here

sir

you need to wait in the surgical lounge,"

she said

pushing me back gently.

The doors swung shut

leaving me alone in the sterile corridor

my hands covered in cold sweat.

I stood there

feeling completely helpless

the weight of the entire world crashing down on me.

My wife and my unborn child were fighting for their lives inside that room

and it was all because of my mother's cruelty.

I walked slowly to the surgical waiting room

which was empty and dark.

As I sat down

the main doors opened and two men in security uniforms walked in.

They weren't the hospital security guards from earlier.

They were the private security guards who had been with my mother.

"Jake Evans?"

one of them asked

his voice cold and devoid of emotion.

"You need to come with us."

I stood up

backing away from them until my back hit the wall.

"Get away from me

or I will scream for help,"

I warned

looking around for any sign of life.

"There's no one here to help you

kid,"

the other guard said

reaching into his jacket and revealing the handle of a firearm.

"Your mother wants to see you

and she doesn't like to be kept waiting."

"If you come quietly

nothing happens to your wife inside that room."

The threat was clear and terrifying.

May you like

They had infiltrated the hospital

and they were holding my family's survival over my head.
