Chapter 20 - A New Horizon

In October,

our son was born.

We named him Lucas,

after my grandfather who had set up the trust.

He had Megan's bright eyes and my unruly hair.

When the nurse handed him to me for the first time,

I cried.

Not out of sadness,

but out of pure,

unadulterated joy.

He was safe.

We were safe.

My mother never tried to contact us again.

She had moved away,

selling her house to pay off her debts.

The shadow was completely gone.

One afternoon,

I watched Megan sitting in the rocking chair in the nursery.

She was singing a quiet lullaby,

the same song she used to sing before everything changed.

Lucas was fast asleep in her arms.

The sun was setting,

filling the room with a warm,

golden light.

I stood in the doorway,

just watching them.

The journey had been terrible.

The pain had been real.

But looking at my wife and my son,

I knew we had won.

May you like

We had saved each other.

And the future was ours to write.
