Chapter 14 - The Hidden Sanctuary

The car tires crunched on the gravel road,
stopping in front of a small,
isolated cottage,
surrounded by tall pine trees,
hidden from the main highway.
The house was dark,
save for a single dim light,
shining through the small kitchen window.
Julian turned off the engine,
his hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white,
staring at the small structure.
"We're here,"
Lily said happily,
unbuckling her seatbelt,
ready to run inside to her mother.
Julian got out of the car,
his legs feeling like lead,
every step toward the front door requiring a massive amount of effort.
He held Lily's hand,
following her up the wooden steps,
which creaked loudly under their weight.
Lily didn't wait,
she pushed the door open,
calling out into the quiet house,
"Mommy!"
"I found him!"
"I brought him back!"
Julian stepped into the warm room,
the scent of lavender and old books filling his senses,
bringing back memories of a life he had lost.
From the bedroom hallway,
a fragile figure appeared,
holding onto the wall for support,
her face pale,
May you like
yet unmistakably beautiful.
It was Clara.
