Chapter 16 - The Web of Treachery
They sat together on the small sofa,
Lily sitting happily between them,
holding both of their hands,
feeling the warmth of a complete family for the very first time.
Clara took a deep breath,
her voice trembling as she began to explain the dark truth,
unveiling the conspiracy that had separated them.
"Five years ago,
when I discovered I was pregnant,"
"I was so excited to tell you,"
"but Vanessa found out first."
"She and her mother cornered me at the river overlook,"
"they threatened to ruin your family business,"
"they threatened to destroy your life if I didn't disappear."
Julian's blood ran cold,
his fists clenching in anger,
"They did this?"
Clara nodded slowly,
a tear falling down her cheek,
"They staged the accident,"
"they paid off the doctors to forge the death certificate,"
"and they told me if I ever returned,"
"they would kill our unborn child."
"I was terrified,
Julian,"
"I had to protect Lily,"
"so I ran away,"
"hiding here in secret,"
"living a life of fear."
