Chapter 5 - The Relic of the Past

The little girl continued to sob,

shaking on the cold floor,

trying to protect herself,

whispering through her tears,

"I didn't mean to."

Julian stood frozen,

his heart racing wildly,

not because of the broken glass,

nor because of Vanessa's sudden outburst.

His eyes were locked,

staring intensely,

at something that had fallen,

from the girl's small hand during the fall.

It was an old silver locket,

scratched yet beautifully engraved,

shaped like a delicate heart,

catching the bright chandelier light.

"Wait..."

Julian muttered,

his voice suddenly dropping to a whisper,

his face turning completely pale,

as if he had just seen a ghost.

A close friend stepped forward,

looking at Julian's shocked expression,

asking with deep concern,

"What's wrong?"

Julian did not answer,

he could not breathe,

his mind was spinning backwards,

into a time he thought was gone forever.

He knelt down slowly,

completely ignoring his furious bride,

completely ignoring the whispering guests,

his hand trembling violently,

as he reached out toward the silver object.

He picked it up gently,

feeling its familiar weight,

recognizing the unique engravings on the surface,

May you like

the initials carved deep into the silver,

initials that haunted his dreams every single night.
