Chapter 7 - The Paradox of Death

Julian shook his head in denial,
the truth was too heavy,
too impossible to accept,
too painful to believe.
"That's impossible..."
he whispered to himself,
his eyes wide with bewilderment,
looking at the silver heart,
then back at the little girl.
The child tilted her head,
her innocent eyes filled with confusion,
asking him directly,
"Why?"
Julian gripped the locket tighter,
the sharp edges cutting into his palm,
but he felt no physical pain,
only an overwhelming wave of confusion and shock.
"It belonged to my ex-wife,"
he said aloud,
turning toward the shocked crowd,
addressing the whispering guests,
revealing a past they all knew.
A collective gasp echoed through the room,
as a guest whispered loudly,
"What?"
Everyone knew the tragic story of Julian's first marriage,
the beautiful Clara who had disappeared,
the woman who had been pronounced dead,
after a terrible accident five years ago.
"We were told she died,"
Julian said,
his voice cracking,
looking at Vanessa,
whose face had suddenly turned from angry to completely terrified,
her eyes darting around the room nervously.
The revelation struck the ballroom like lightning,
shattering the peaceful wedding atmosphere,
May you like
replacing it with a dark,
suffocating mystery.
