Chapter 12 - The Confession

Andrew didn't even bother asking how I had discovered the truth. He didn't feign ignorance. His very first sentence, spoken with his hands raised defensively, was, "Claire, we need to discuss this calmly and rationally."
I pulled out a chair and sat down at the kitchen table, gesturing to the seat opposite me.
"Then let's talk calmly."
Lorraine immediately scurried over to stand protectively by his side, a silent, loyal guard dog.
Andrew took off his jacket, tossing it over the back of a chair. His hands were trembling noticeably.
"The woman's name is Vanessa Cole," he began, his voice tight.
"I already know what she looks like," I said, tapping the envelope.
"This whole thing... it only started a few months ago."
"Seven months, Andrew. The timestamps on the security photos are very precise."
His eyes darted nervously toward the brown envelope again. "Bethany had no right to get involved. She had an agenda."
He sat down heavily in the chair. "I never, ever intended for you to find out this way, Claire."
"What way did you intend for me to find out? Were you planning a PowerPoint presentation?"
"I was just trying to figure out what I really wanted out of life," he mumbled, looking at his hands.
"You used the cabin that we bought together—the cabin my overtime shifts helped pay for—to conduct a seven-month affair. Meanwhile, your mother lived in our primary home rent-free and treated me like unpaid domestic labor."
Lorraine aggressively interjected. "Do not drag me into your marital problems, Claire! This is between you two."
"You dragged yourself in, Lorraine, the moment you sat down at my table and ate dinner with his mistress."
Andrew aggressively rubbed his temples, looking exhausted. "Vanessa actually listened to me, Claire."
"I have listened to you complain for seven years, Andrew."
"You always try to find logical solutions to everything," he whined. "Sometimes a man just needs someone to listen and validate his feelings without telling him what to do to fix it."
"You constantly complained that I tried to fix your problems, yet you fully expected me to manage every single practical, logistical problem in our shared life."
He flinched slightly, but I didn't stop.
"I handled the insurance policies, the property taxes, the major repairs, your mother's endless medical appointments, planning the family vacations, and balancing the budget. Your mother has lived here for two years simply because you were too cowardly to ask her to leave. The only thing you were solely responsible for was managing the vacation cabin, and you used it to fund a secret second life."
"I know how terrible this looks on paper," he pleaded.
"It doesn't just look terrible, Andrew. It is terrible. It is a complete, structural failure of a marriage."
Lorraine stepped closer, placing a comforting hand on his trembling shoulder. "He made a mistake, Claire. He is only human."

"A seven-month, coordinated deception involving multiple properties and family members is not a 'mistake,' Lorraine. It is a lifestyle choice."
