Chapter 39 - The Housewarming

|

I had never been a big fan of hosting parties. During my marriage, hosting meant managing Lorraine's dramatic demands, cooking for Andrew's ungrateful friends, and quietly cleaning up everyone else's mess. But the new kitchen demanded a celebration.

I hosted a housewarming party on a warm Saturday evening in late September. It was a small, curated guest list: Naomi, Chloe, Elias, and a few close colleagues from the hospital who had supported me through the darkest days.

The house was filled with genuine laughter, the clinking of wine glasses, and the smell of roasting garlic and herbs. There was no tension. There were no silent judgments or passive-aggressive comments disguised as advice.

I stood in the corner of the kitchen, watching my guests. Naomi was animatedly telling Chloe a story about a ridiculous court case, making the younger nurse laugh out loud. Elias was at the stove, effortlessly managing the appetizers, occasionally looking over his shoulder to catch my eye and smile.

This was what a chosen family looked like. It wasn't built on obligation, guilt, or shared DNA. It was built on mutual respect, genuine affection, and enforced boundaries.

I realized then that the house was no longer just a legal asset protected by a green folder. The house had finally become a home. I had fought a brutal war to keep these walls, and looking at the joy contained within them, I knew every single tear, every legal fee, and every moment of terror had been absolutely worth it.
