Chapter 7 - Seeking Counsel

|

I described the morning's events to Naomi in crisp, clinical detail: the thrown pot, Lorraine’s escalating threats, Andrew’s chronic refusal to establish basic boundaries, and my growing, undeniable fear that the financial reality of the lake cabin was being deliberately hidden from me.

"Are you safe right now?" Naomi asked, her lawyer persona instantly engaged.

"Yes. I’m locked in the master bedroom."

"Do you want to file a police report regarding the assault?"

I hesitated. I wasn't sure.

"You don't have to decide this second," Naomi said gently but firmly. "Keep those photos secure. Write down the exact words she used, while they are still fresh in your memory. Email a copy of everything to yourself and to me."

I followed her instructions immediately.

Then, she pivoted to the financials. "Deeds?"

"Both names," I confirmed.

"Mortgage?"

"Both names."

"Down payment documentation?"

"I have the transfer receipts and the notarized acknowledgment signed by Andrew."

"Excellent," Naomi said.

I almost laughed out loud hearing that word. Nothing about this situation felt excellent. It felt like my life was imploding.

"Don't announce your intention to divorce him just yet," Naomi continued, laying out a strategy. "Not until we have a clear picture of exactly what is happening with the house, the bank accounts, the retirement funds, and any hidden debts you might not be aware of. Back up every file. Change your personal email passwords immediately. Don't drain the joint accounts, but document the current balances right now."

"I want you to represent me, Naomi."

There was a brief pause on the line.

"Are you absolutely sure, Claire?"

I looked over at the black gouge in the headboard.

"Yes. I'm sure."

"Then, starting right now, do not sign a single piece of paper Andrew or Lorraine gives you. Do not engage in emotional arguments. Keep all communication strictly fact-based. If you feel unsafe for even a second, leave the house and call emergency services."

Before I could answer her, the doorbell downstairs rang sharply.

Lorraine yelled from the kitchen that she wasn't expecting any visitors.

I ended the call with Naomi and walked out into the hallway.
