Chapter 25 - A New Acquaintance

|

The hospital cafeteria was notoriously loud and generally served food that tasted vaguely of cardboard, but it was a necessary evil on a twelve-hour shift. I was standing in line for coffee when I accidentally bumped into a tall man wearing dark blue scrubs, spilling a few drops of his tea onto the linoleum floor.

"I am so sorry," I said quickly, reaching for a napkin.

"Don't worry about it," he laughed, his voice warm and resonant. "It was mostly water anyway."

I looked up. He had kind, crinkling eyes and a thoroughly exhausted smile. I recognized him vaguely from the staff directory—Dr. Elias Thorne, the new head of pediatric cardiology.

"Long shift?" he asked, noticing my badge.

"Twelve hours. You?"

"Fourteen. The coffee here is the only thing keeping me upright."

We walked out of the line together, finding a quiet corner table. We talked for twenty minutes, mostly about hospital politics and the challenges of the new electronic charting system. But what struck me the most wasn't his intelligence or his easy humor; it was the way he listened.

When I spoke, he didn't interrupt. He didn't wait for my mouth to stop moving just so he could formulate his own reply. He actually engaged with my words. He maintained eye contact without it feeling predatory or competitive.

"I heard you ran the trauma bay like a general yesterday," Elias noted, swirling his tea. "The nurses are calling you the Ice Queen, but they mean it as a high compliment."

I smiled genuinely. "I prefer 'efficiently detached.' It saves lives."

"I like it," he said simply.

When his pager beeped, he stood up, gave me a polite nod, and left. There was no lingering pressure, no forced attempt to grab my phone number. It was just a pleasant, respectful interaction. I walked back to my department feeling remarkably light.
