Chapter 28 - Unmasking the Delusion

|

The rest of the deposition was a disaster for Andrew’s legal team. His lawyer, Vance, had clearly built his entire strategy on Andrew’s lies, assuming I was the domineering, secretive monster Lorraine had painted me to be. But the forensic accountant they had hired found absolutely nothing. In fact, the accountant's report confirmed that I had actually paid down a significant portion of Andrew’s personal credit card debt during the marriage out of my own separate funds.

Naomi took over the questioning, and she was merciless.

"Mr. Vance," Naomi said, sliding a thick stack of papers across the table. "These are the credit card statements from your client's affair. My client paid for the dinners, the gifts, and the getaways. Furthermore, my client entirely funded the down payment on the marital home, a fact already proven in the original decree."

Vance looked at the papers, then glared at Andrew. "You didn't tell me this."

"He doesn't tell anyone the truth, Mr. Vance," Naomi said smoothly. "Not even himself. My client owes your client nothing. In fact, if we want to pursue this, we could counter-sue for the legal fees incurred responding to this entirely frivolous action."

Andrew buried his face in his hands. "My mother told me to do it," he whispered, his voice cracking. "She said I deserved compensation for my emotional suffering. She said you would cave."

It was the most pathetic thing I had ever heard. Even now, facing total financial ruin, he was still hiding behind Lorraine's skirts. He was incapable of taking responsibility for a single choice in his life.

"Your mother isn't here, Andrew," I said, my voice completely devoid of sympathy. "And neither is my patience. This ends today."
