Chapter 36 - The First Date

|

Saturday morning arrived with bright, crisp autumn air. I met Elias at the bakery a few blocks from the hospital. He was already sitting at a small wrought-iron table on the patio, wearing a casual sweater that made him look less like a doctor and more like a very handsome professor.

He had ordered two lattes and a plate of pastries.

"I didn't know what you liked, so I panicked and ordered one of everything," he confessed, smiling as I sat down.

"A highly scientific approach. I approve," I laughed.

The date was remarkably easy. We didn't trauma-dump. We didn't spend two hours analyzing our past marriages or complaining about our exes. Instead, we talked about books, travel, and our favorite bizarre medical cases.

But midway through the coffee, the conversation naturally drifted to the concept of boundaries.

"I noticed you're very protective of your personal time," Elias observed, not as a criticism, but as a compliment. "You don't take your charts home. You draw a hard line."

"I have to," I explained, breaking off a piece of a croissant. "I used to let everything bleed together. I thought being indispensable meant being constantly available. I ended up burning down my own house to keep other people warm. I don't do that anymore."

Elias looked at me, his eyes entirely focused. "I respect that completely. I want you to know, I’m not looking for someone to manage my life for me. I'm looking for a partner, not a project."

It was exactly what I needed to hear. He wasn't threatened by my independence; he valued it. He saw my boundaries not as walls to tear down, but as the foundation of a healthy respect.

May you like

"I'd like to see you again," I said.

"I'd like that very much," Elias replied.
