Chapter 30 - Passing the Green Folder

|

I spent the next hour talking to Chloe in the quiet sanctuary of the breakroom. I didn't tell her my entire story—she didn't need the cinematic drama of Lorraine's cast-iron pot—but I told her enough to make her realize she wasn't alone. I told her about the danger of blind trust and the absolute necessity of a paper trail.

"The first thing you do," I instructed, writing down a list on a prescription pad, "is freeze your credit. Immediately. The second thing you do is open a brand-new bank account at a completely different institution, and you route your hospital paycheck there."

"He'll be so angry," Chloe said, her voice trembling. "He checks my banking app."

"Let him be angry," I replied firmly. "His anger is not a lethal weapon unless you allow it to govern your actions. You are a highly trained medical professional. You hold people's lives in your hands every day. You are strong enough to hold your own life, too."

I wrote down Naomi’s contact information and handed the paper to her.

"This is my lawyer. She is vicious, she is brilliant, and she will help you untangle this loan. Tell her I sent you."

Chloe took the paper as if it were a life raft. "Why are you helping me?"

"Because once upon a time, I needed someone to tell me that demanding respect wasn't a crime," I said, standing up. "Start building your own green folder, Chloe. Document everything. Save every text, every bank statement. It's not paranoia. It's preparation."

As I walked out of the breakroom, I felt a profound shift within myself. The trauma of my past was no longer just a burden I carried; it had become a tool I could use to protect someone else.
