Chapter 40 - The Open Horizon

|

Life does not magically become perfect after escaping abuse, but it does become yours.

There are still days when I feel a phantom echo of anxiety, a lingering muscle memory of bracing for an attack when a door slams too loudly. Trauma leaves a scar that occasionally aches when the weather turns cold. But the difference now is that I am no longer afraid of the ache.

I know exactly how strong I am.

The green folder still sits in the heavy, fireproof filing cabinet in my office. I don't look at it anymore, but I am fiercely glad it is there. It represents the most terrifying, courageous thing I have ever done: believing my own reality and refusing to apologize for my own survival.

My relationship with Elias has deepened beautifully, built slowly on a foundation of absolute honesty. We do not demand blind vulnerability from each other; we earn trust every single day through consistent, respectful actions.

Andrew and Lorraine are simply ghosts that have faded into the background noise of the past. I don't know where they are, and I don't care. Their inability to manipulate me was their ultimate undoing.

If there is a lesson in my story, it is this: endurance is not a virtue when you are enduring abuse. Financial literacy is the most potent form of self-defense a person can possess. And walking away from a table where love is served alongside poison is the greatest victory you can ever achieve.

I sit on my back porch now, watching the sun set over the garden I planted myself. The air is warm, the house is quiet, and the horizon is wide open. The ledger is finally closed, perfectly balanced, and entirely mine.
