Chapter 4 - The Green Folder

I sat on the edge of the mattress, my heart pounding, and looked directly at Lorraine.
"Get out of my room," I said, my voice steady but cold.
Her eyes narrowed to slits. "This is my son's house. I'll go where I please."
"Leave. Now."
"Do you think just because you have a uniform and a paycheck that you're better than me?" she sneered, crossing her arms defensively.
"I think you just threw a piece of solid iron at my head."
"Oh, stop it. You're always so dramatic."
Without another word, I reached for my phone on the nightstand and took three clear photos: the deep gouge in the headboard, the heavy pot on the floor, and the short distance between where the pot landed and where my head had been.
For the first time that morning, a flicker of genuine hesitation crossed Lorraine's angry face.
"What are you doing?" she demanded, stepping back slightly.
"Documenting exactly what happened here."
"Are you going to call the police on your own mother-in-law?" she asked, her voice rising in panic.
"I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet."
"You're trying to destroy this family!"
I looked down at the thick green folder resting in my lap. I traced the edge of the cardboard with my thumb.

"No, Lorraine," I replied quietly. "I'm finally stopping this family from destroying me."
