Chapter 14 - The Eviction

|

The heavy oak door to the dining room swung open abruptly. Lorraine marched back into the room, her face twisted in a mask of aggressive self-righteousness.

"This house belongs to Andrew!" she declared loudly, pointing a shaking finger at me. "Claire showed up here seven years ago with nothing but a suitcase and a terrible attitude!"

I calmly opened my green folder. I didn't raise my voice. I simply extracted the original property deed, the bank transfer receipts, and the notarized acknowledgment signed by her son.

"I entered this marriage with an established medical career, a significant inheritance, and properly executed legal documents," I stated, laying the papers out on the polished wood table. "I personally wired one hundred and forty-five thousand dollars to secure the purchase of this property."

Lorraine lunged forward, her hand shooting out to snatch the papers off the table.

Naomi was faster. She slapped her hand firmly down on the edge of the documents.

"Do not touch original legal exhibits," Naomi warned, her voice vibrating with authority.

Lorraine yanked her hand back, turning furiously to Andrew. "Tell them, Andrew! Tell them that your hard-earned money paid the monthly mortgage!"

"Our combined marital income paid the monthly mortgage, Lorraine," I corrected her. "My inheritance secured the actual purchase. You have been living in a house funded largely by my grandmother."

"You are stealing his future!" she shrieked.

"No. I am legally reclaiming my share of the present."

Then, I pulled out a printed real estate search document. It clearly showed that Lorraine still legally owned her apartment building in Syracuse.

"You repeatedly told us that your apartment was locked into a long-term lease, and that you absolutely had to live here because your back problems required constant supervision," I said, sliding the paper toward her. "County tax and rental records show absolutely no active tenant registration for your property in the last eight months."

All the color drained from Lorraine’s face. She looked genuinely terrified. "You hired someone to investigate me?"

"I simply verified the claims you continuously used to manipulate your way into my home."

I stood up, resting my hands on the table, and looked directly into her eyes.

"You own a home, Lorraine. You do not currently have a lease preventing you from living there. You pay absolutely no rent to live here. Following your physical assault on me this morning, and your admitted participation in concealing your son's affair, your permission to reside in this property is permanently revoked."

Lorraine whipped her head toward Andrew, her eyes wide with panic. "Andrew! Defend me! Do something!"

Andrew stared down at his hands, entirely silent.
