Chapter 37 - Chloe's Escape

|

A few weeks later, Chloe knocked tentatively on my office door. She looked different. The heavy, dark circles under her eyes had lightened, and she stood a little straighter.

"Do you have a minute?" she asked.

"Always," I said, closing my laptop.

She walked in and sat down, a nervous but genuine smile breaking across her face. "I did it. I moved out this weekend while he was out of town. Naomi helped me draft a legal separation of assets, and we filed a police report for identity theft regarding the loan."

A surge of intense pride swelled in my chest. "How do you feel?"

"Terrified," she admitted honestly. "He blew up my phone for two days. But I blocked him. I changed my bank accounts, just like you said. I have my own tiny apartment now. It's basically a closet, but it's mine. Nobody can take it from me."

"That is the best feeling in the world," I told her.

"I wanted to thank you," Chloe said, reaching into her scrub pocket. She pulled out a small, standard-issue green hospital folder and placed it on my desk. "I started my own file. Everything is documented. I wouldn't have had the courage to do it if you hadn't told me your story."

I looked at the green folder sitting on my desk. The legacy of my trauma had transformed into a blueprint for someone else's survival.

"You did the hard work, Chloe. You saved yourself," I said gently. "But keep that folder safe. Let it remind you that you are entirely capable of protecting your own life."

She nodded, took the folder back, and walked out of my office looking like a completely different woman.
