Chapter 1 - The Midnight Trust and the Missing Heir

Julian Hail stood frozen against the sweeping floor-to-ceiling glass of his Manhattan penthouse.

Outside,

the winter wind whipped across the dark expanse of the Hudson River.

Inside,

the silent tension was thick enough to suffocate a grown man.

Elena stood a few paces away,

her hands trembling slightly as she clutched her cotton apron.

She had worked as his head housekeeper for nearly two grueling years.

She knew every quirk of his ruthless corporate demeanor.

She knew how he took his coffee black,

exactly at six in the morning.

She knew the precise angle at which he liked his leather portfolio placed on his mahogany desk.

Yet tonight,

none of those routines mattered.

Ivy,

her three-year-old daughter,

had casually dropped a nuclear bomb disguised as a child's bedtime request.

She had asked the multi-billionaire tycoon for a toy friend by tomorrow.

And then she had revealed that the toy was not for her.

It was for a six-year-old boy named Toby locked away inside Saint Anne's Children's Home.

Julian slowly turned his head away from the glittering skyline.

His sharp,

slate-grey eyes locked onto Elena.

The name Saint Anne's carried a violent weight in the Hail family history.

It was a name that had been buried under millions of dollars in hush money,

sealed court records,

and institutional corruption.

Julian took a slow step forward,

his Italian leather shoes clicking softly against the pristine marble.

“Explain that name to me,

Elena,” Julian commanded,

his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous murmur.

Elena swallowed hard,

her throat feeling as dry as desert sand.

“Mr.

Hail,

I didn't mean for Ivy to say anything,” Elena whispered,

her voice barely audible over the hum of the climate control.

“That is not an answer,” Julian snapped,

closing the distance between them with terrifying speed.

“You mentioned Saint Anne's,” Julian continued,

his jaw tightening until the muscle feathered.

“That institution was shut down by my legal team three years ago.

“Or so I was led to believe by my corporate board.

Elena shook her head frantically,

dark strands of hair escaping her bun.

“It wasn't shut down,

Mr.

Hail,” Elena confessed,

tears pricking the corners of her eyes.

“It was rebranded.

“It was hidden behind a shell corporation managed by Victor Vance.

Julian’s breath hitched.

Victor Vance was his senior managing partner,

his closest confidante in Hail Group,

and the man Julian had trusted with his life.

“Vance,” Julian growled,

the single word dripping with lethal venom.

“Vance controls the trust,

Mr.

Hail,” Elena cried out,

unable to hold back the truth any longer.

“And tomorrow morning,

at exactly six o'clock,

six-year-old Toby is being transferred to an undisclosed overseas facility.

“A facility from which children never return.

Julian stared at her,

the multi-billion-dollar empire he commanded suddenly feeling like a fragile house of cards built on blood and deception.

“Why?” Julian demanded,

stepping right up to her.

“Because Toby is not just any orphan,” Elena whispered,

looking straight into his eyes.

“Toby is Clara Hail's son.
