Chapter 7 - Elena’s Hidden Past

Back on the forty-second floor,

the heavy oak doors of the master penthouse remained locked and bolted from the inside.

Elena sat in the dimly lit study,

cradling sleeping Ivy in her lap while staring out at the breathtaking expanse of the sleeping city.

The silence of the penthouse felt heavy,

pregnant with unspoken fears.

Arthur stood quietly by the doorway,

holding a silver tray with a steaming cup of chamomile tea.

“You should drink something,

Elena,” Arthur urged gently,

his voice breaking the heavy stillness.

“You have carried this immense burden entirely alone for five long years.

Elena took the cup with a trembling hand,

taking a small sip before setting it down on the edge of the mahogany desk.

“I wasn't always just a housekeeper,

Arthur,” Elena murmured,

her eyes reflecting the distant city lights.

“Before Clara died,

I was her senior legal clerk at Hail Group.

“I helped her draft the original offshore trust documents that protected Toby’s identity.

“When Clara’s car went off that cliff in Maine,

I knew it wasn't an accident.

“I knew that if I went to the police,

I would end up the same way.

“So I burned my professional credentials,

dyed my hair,

changed my name,

and applied for an entry-level housekeeping position in Julian’s household.

“I spent two years scrubbing his floors just to make sure Clara's son had someone watching over him from the inside.

Arthur looked at her with profound admiration in his weathered eyes.

“Loyalty like yours is a rare commodity in this world,

Elena,” Arthur said softly.

“Mr.

Hail is a hard man,

hardened by decades of corporate betrayal.

“But when he realizes the depth of what you sacrificed for his family,

his entire world will shift.

“I don't need his gratitude,

Arthur,” Elena replied,

looking down at sleeping Ivy,

who snuggled closer into her chest with a soft sigh.

“I just want Toby to be safe.

“I just want him to grow up knowing what it feels like to be loved by a family instead of being treated like a corporate liability.

Suddenly,

a low,

ominous chime echoed through the penthouse security system.

Arthur’s head snapped toward the master console on the wall.

“What is that?” Elena whispered,

her heart skipping a beat.

Arthur strode rapidly to the console,

tapping the touch-sensitive glass display.

“Perimeter breach,” Arthur announced,

his voice dropping into a steely register.

“Private elevator override code entered from the sub-level.

“Someone is coming up.
