Chapter 5 - The Butler’s Ledger

Before Julian could reach the private elevator vestibule,

the heavy oak study doors clicked open.

Arthur,

the seventy-year-old head butler who had served three generations of Hails with immaculate precision,

stepped into the hallway.

He was impeccably dressed in a tailored three-piece suit,

his silver hair combed back without a single stray strand.

In his gloved hands,

Arthur carried an antique mahogany lockbox.

“Pardon the intrusion,

Mr.

Hail,” Arthur said smoothly,

his voice carrying the calm authority of a man who had witnessed decades of corporate warfare.

“I could not help overhearing your conversation through the intercom system.

Julian frowned slightly.

“Arthur,

this is a matter of family survival.

“It is far beyond household administration.

“Precisely why I am here,

sir,” Arthur replied,

stepping forward and placing the mahogany lockbox onto the glass coffee table beside Clara’s trust documents.

He pulled a small silver key from his waistcoat pocket and turned the brass lock.

The lid popped open to reveal stacks of encrypted flash drives,

handwritten ledgers,

and original bank transfer receipts stamped with the seal of the Cayman Islands.

“What is this?” Julian asked,

staring at the contents.

“This,

Mr.

Hail,

is the financial paper trail that your late sister spent the final six months of her life compiling,” Arthur explained,

his eyes gleaming with suppressed fury.

“Miss Clara knew that someone within the executive board was embezzling funds from the charitable endowments to finance illegal offshore acquisitions.

“She discovered that Victor Vance had systematically looted over four hundred million dollars from Saint Anne’s trust fund under the guise of facility maintenance.

“When she threatened to expose him at the annual shareholder meeting,

her brakes failed on the coastal highway in Maine.

Julian stared at the ledgers,

the blood pounding violently in his ears.

The pieces of the puzzle clicked together with terrifying clarity.

Vance hadn't just stolen his sister; he had stolen his entire legacy,

hiding behind a facade of corporate loyalty while bleeding the empire dry.

“Thank you,

Arthur,” Julian said,

his voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage.

“You have preserved more than just family records tonight.

“You have preserved our honor.

“It is my sworn duty,

Mr.

Hail,” Arthur replied with a solemn bow.

“Now,

if I may suggest,

you should take these drives with you.

“When you confront Mr.

Vance in the boardroom this morning,

you will need more than a court order to strip him of his voting shares.

“You will need absolute,

undeniable proof of treason.

Julian scooped the flash drives into his breast pocket alongside Clara’s trust document.

“Vance won't know what hit him,” Julian whispered grimly.

May you like

“Let’s ride.
