Chapter 10 - The Unseen Player

Vance stared down at the manila folder as if it were a venomous snake coiled on the glass table.
His mind raced frantically,
calculating exit strategies,
shell corporations,
and offshore bribes.
“You have no proof that links me to the trust tampering,” Vance spat out,
his voice turning shrill and desperate.
“Every transaction was routed through anonymous third-party holding companies.
”
“The federal prosecutors won't touch me without a direct digital signature.
”
Julian smiled coldly.
“Arthur?”
The elderly butler stepped forward,
holding up one of the encrypted flash drives recovered from the mahogany lockbox.
“Direct digital signature,
cryptographic hash verification,
and recorded phone conversations between yourself and the corrupt director of Saint Anne’s,
Mr.
Vance,” Arthur recited smoothly.
“Stored securely on a non-networked server.
”
“It is all right here.
”
Vance’s two security guards glanced nervously at their employer,
their hands instinctively moving away from their concealed holsters as they realized the game was irrevocably over.
Suddenly,
the heavy oak doors of the study swung open.
Little Ivy walked out into the living room,
rubbing her eyes sleepily with one hand while dragging her stuffed rabbit behind her with the other.
She had slipped out of the panic room when she heard the familiar sound of Julian’s voice.
“Mommy said bad men were here,” Ivy mumbled,
her big dark eyes blinking against the bright penthouse lights.
She stopped right in front of Victor Vance,
looking up at the terrified corporate titan with innocent curiosity.
Vance looked down at the three-year-old child,
realizing with sickening clarity that an entire multi-billion-dollar empire had been dismantled not by federal investigators or rival billionaires,
but by a little girl asking for a toy friend.
Ivy reached into the pocket of her pink dress and pulled out a small,
crumpled piece of paper she had picked up off the study floor.
She held it up to Vance.
“You dropped your ticket,” Ivy said innocently.
Vance didn't take it.
He simply stood there,
paralyzed by the sheer humiliation of his defeat.
Julian walked past Vance,
kneeling down beside Ivy to gently scoop her up into his arms.
“You did good,
baby,” Julian whispered,
pressing a soft kiss to the top of her dark curls.
“Go back inside with Mommy now.
”
Ivy nodded sleepily,
resting her head against Julian’s broad shoulder.
Julian carried her back to the study doorway,
May you like
handing her safely back to Elena,
who stood watching with tears streaming freely down her cheeks.
