Chapter 8 - The Confrontation on the Forty-Second Floor

The private elevator indicator light glowed a harsh,

pulsing red as it ascended past the thirtieth floor.

Arthur moved swiftly across the study,

pulling a heavy brass fireplace poker from its stand and positioning himself discreetly beside the double doors.

“Take Ivy into the reinforced panic room behind the bookshelf,

Elena,” Arthur instructed in a firm,

unwavering whisper.

“Now.

“No,

Arthur,

I’m not leaving you here alone,” Elena protested,

her hands tightening around her daughter.

“Obey me,

Elena!” Arthur commanded,

his eyes flashing with fierce authority.

“If Victor Vance’s men have breached the building,

you and that little girl are their primary targets.

“Go!”

Reluctantly,

Elena scrambled toward the hidden wall panel behind the antique mahogany bookcase,

twisting the secret brass latch that swung the heavy door open.

She ducked inside into the dimly lit safety of the panic room,

pulling the door shut just as a loud,

resonant chime echoed through the grand foyer.

The private elevator doors slid open with a soft metallic ping.

A figure stepped out onto the pristine white marble floor of the penthouse living room.

It wasn't a tactical assault team.

It was Victor Vance himself.

He was impeccably dressed in a bespoke charcoal tuxedo,

his silver-streaked hair neatly styled,

a smug,

triumphant smile plastered across his handsome,

ruthless face.

Behind him stood two armed private security guards in plainclothes,

their hands resting casually over concealed holsters.

Vance casually adjusted his silk cuffs,

stepping forward into the grand living room as if he owned the entire building.

“Good evening,

Arthur,” Vance said smoothly,

his voice dripping with condescension.

“I trust Julian is still sleeping soundly in his ignorance?”

Arthur stepped out from the hallway into the living room,

holding the brass fireplace poker with a firm,

steady grip.

“Mr.

Vance,

you are trespassing on private property,” Arthur stated coldly.

“Mr.

Hail’s legal counsel will have you removed and prosecuted before sunrise.

Vance chuckled softly,

a cold,

mocking sound that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings.

“Prosecuted,

Arthur?” Vance laughed,

shaking his head.

“By morning,

there won't be a Hail Group left for Julian to manage.

“The corporate board has already convened an emergency virtual session.

“Without the legal male heir presented inside this estate by eight o'order tomorrow morning,

the entire multi-billion-dollar conglomerate reverts to my syndicate.

“And as for Julian.

Vance smiled predatorily.
