Chapter 15 - Sunrise at the Penthouse

The private service elevator descended rapidly to the thirty-fifth floor.

When the doors slid open,

Elena stepped out into the sleek,

glass-walled corridor of the corporate data center.

Alarms flashed a pulsating amber light across rows of high-density server racks.

Through the reinforced glass walls of the central server room,

Elena could see Sarah Jenkins—a senior corporate attorney who had smiled in the hallways every single day—frantically typing commands into the master terminal,

attempting to execute the final wipe script.

Sarah looked up,

spotting Elena standing in the doorway.

A cruel,

dismissive smirk crossed Sarah's face.

“You're just a housekeeper,

Elena,” Sarah mocked through the intercom speaker,

her fingers dancing across the mechanical keyboard.

“You can't stop what’s already in motion.

Elena didn't hesitate.

She didn't argue or try to reason with her.

She reached down,

unzipping her heavy canvas utility pouch,

and pulled out a solid brass server-rack locking bar she had grabbed from the utility closet.

With a powerful,

athletic swing,

Elena shattered the reinforced glass pane of the server room door.

Glass shards rained across the polished floor.

Before Sarah could react,

Elena vaulted through the broken frame,

lunged across the console,

and slammed the heavy brass bar directly across the master terminal keyboard.

Sparks showered from the electronic console as the motherboard short-circuited instantly.

The main terminal screen flickered once and went pitch black.

The transfer script was aborted with three seconds remaining.

Sarah stumbled backward,

tripping over a data cable and hitting the floor hard.

Elena stood over her,

breathing heavily,

her eyes cold and unyielding.

“You underestimated us,” Elena said quietly.

Up above,

on the forty-second floor,

the first amber rays of December sunlight broke over the jagged horizon of the Manhattan skyline,

flooding the penthouse with warm,

golden light.

The helicopter bearing six-year-old Toby touched down softly on the private rooftop pad of the Hail Tower.

The nightmare was finally over.
