Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Clara Hail

The name struck Julian like a physical blow.
Clara Hail.
His younger sister.
The brilliant,
fierce rebel of the Hail dynasty who had vanished five years ago in a fiery,
suspicious car crash along the coast of Maine.
The official police report had ruled it an accidental tragedy caused by winter black ice.
The coroner's inquest had been suspiciously swift.
The closed-casket funeral had been attended by hand-picked dignitaries and silent men in black suits.
Julian had mourned her with a quiet,
hollow grief that had turned his heart into stone.
He had believed she died alone,
unmarried,
and completely estranged from the family.
Yet here,
standing in his ultra-luxurious penthouse kitchen,
his housekeeper was telling him that Clara had left behind a child.
A son.
A flesh-and-blood nephew.
“That is impossible,” Julian muttered,
stumbling backward until his hip hit the edge of the marble island.
“Clara died five years ago,” Julian said,
his voice cracking slightly before he regained his icy composure.
“If she had a child,
I would have known.
”
“The family trust lawyers audited every asset,
every medical record,
every centimeter of her estate.
”
Elena walked over to the kitchen counter,
picking up a worn leather-bound notebook she had kept hidden inside her canvas cleaning bag.
She laid it gently on the cold marble.
“Clara knew they were hunting her,
Mr.
Hail,” Elena explained,
her fingers gently tracing the worn spine of the notebook.
“She knew that Victor Vance and the old board members wanted absolute control over the Hail Group succession.
”
“They didn't want a female heir running the conglomerate.
”
“And they certainly wouldn't have tolerated a child born out of wedlock with a man they deemed undesirable.
”
“So Clara hid her pregnancy.
”
“She trusted me with her life,
and with her son's life.
”
“She gave birth to Toby in a private clinic in Vermont just two months before her supposed accident.
”
“The car crash wasn't an accident,
Julian.
”
“It was an assassination.
”
Julian’s eyes widened in horror.
The revelation washed over him with the force of a tidal wave.
Every corporate merger,
every hostile takeover,
every late-night boardroom knife fight he had survived over the past decade suddenly took on a sinister new meaning.
“Vance,” Julian whispered,
the name tasting like ash in his mouth.
“Vance orchestrated the crash.
”
“Vance seized control of the confidential probate trust.
”
“And Vance placed Clara's child in Saint Anne's under a false identity to slowly bleed the estate dry through fraudulent guardianship fees.
”
Elena nodded grimly.
“And the worst part is the expiration clause in Clara's original trust document,” Elena added,
her voice dropping to a terrified whisper.
“If the legal male heir is not presented and claimed inside the primary Hail estate before his seventh birthday—which happens to be tomorrow—the entire multi-billion-dollar empire permanently defaults to Victor Vance and his offshore shell syndicate.
”
Julian looked at the digital clock on the wall.
