Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Safe

Without a single word,

Julian turned on his heel and strode rapidly toward his private study.

The double oak doors swung open with a muffled click.

The room was dark,

illuminated only by the neon glow of skyscrapers stabbing into the snowy Manhattan night.

Julian crossed the Persian rug,

ignoring the antique brass telescope and the rows of leather-bound law books.

He walked directly to the massive mahogany executive desk.

He knelt down on the plush carpet,

sliding aside a heavy seventeenth-century oil painting that hung on the wood-paneled wall behind the desk.

Revealed behind the painting was a biometric digital safe built directly into the reinforced concrete structure of the building.

Julian pressed his right thumb against the optical scanner.

A soft green light flashed.

He punched a complex twelve-digit numerical sequence into the keypad.

A heavy steel locking mechanism hissed as pressurized air escaped from the chamber.

Julian pulled the heavy steel door open.

Inside,

resting on black velvet,

was a single,

pristine manila folder marked with a red wax seal bearing the private family crest of the Hail dynasty.

It was Clara’s confidential trust document.

The very document that Victor Vance had claimed was destroyed in the Maine fire.

Julian’s hands were remarkably steady as he picked up the folder and carried it back out to the main living area where Elena and little Ivy were waiting.

Ivy had fallen asleep on the large velvet sofa,

her pink dress rumpled,

her small hand still clutching the worn ear of her stuffed rabbit.

Julian placed the manila folder on the glass coffee table and flipped it open.

Inside lay thick,

yellowed sheets of legal parchment covered in Clara's unmistakable sharp,

elegant handwriting.

There were birth certificates,

DNA authentication reports from an independent Swiss laboratory,

bank routing numbers,

and a signed affidavit naming Julian as the legal guardian of her unborn child in the event of her untimely demise.

“She knew,” Julian said quietly,

staring down at the papers as a rare tear escaped his eye.

“She knew they were coming for her,

and she prepared this to protect us all.

Elena stepped closer,

looking down at the documents with a mixture of immense relief and lingering dread.

“She left it in my safe-deposit box three days before she died,” Elena explained softly.

“She told me that if anything ever happened to her,

I was to get close to you,

earn your trust,

and bring you this file when the time was right.

“I spent two years cleaning your floors,

Julian,

just waiting for the right moment to hand you your nephew back.

Julian looked up from the papers,

his slate-grey eyes burning with a cold,

terrifying fury.

“The time for waiting is over,” Julian declared,

standing up to his full height.

“Vance thinks he has won.

“He thinks he can steal my family,

my company,

and my nephew before sunrise.

May you like

“He has severely underestimated what a Hail will do when pushed into a corner.
