Chapter 1 - The Voice in the VentRyan Mitchell knew every sound his house made.

He knew the refrigerator’s midnight hum, the faint knocking of old pipes, and the creak of the third stair whenever his seven-year-old son, Evan, tried sneaking downstairs after bedtime.
But Ryan had never heard a child crying inside the kitchen wall.
He arrived home shortly after seven on a cold November evening and immediately knew something was wrong.
Evan was sitting on the kitchen floor.
His cheeks were wet.
A piece of bread lay beside the ventilation grate near the baseboard.
And Caroline—Ryan’s wife of three years—stood over him holding a broom.
“Evan?”
The boy scrambled to his feet and ran behind Ryan.
Caroline lowered the broom.
“He was misbehaving.”
Ryan felt Evan’s fingers clutch his sweater.
“What happened?”
Evan stared at Caroline.
Fear filled his eyes.
Then he whispered, “She told me never to tell you.”
“Tell me what?”
Evan pointed toward the vent.
“There’s a girl in there.”
Ryan stared at him.
Caroline laughed too quickly.
“He’s been imagining things.”
Then something scraped behind the wall.
Ryan turned.
A tiny hand appeared between the metal slats.
His heart stopped.
Small fingers reached desperately into the kitchen.
Then came a voice.
Weak.
Terrified.
“Daddy…”
Ryan couldn't breathe.
“Help me.”
Caroline went white.
Ryan slowly turned toward his wife.
“Who is that?”
Caroline backed away.
“Ryan, please.”
“WHO IS THAT?”
The child whimpered behind the wall.
Evan began crying.

And Caroline whispered four words that changed Ryan’s life forever.
“She wasn't supposed to wake up.”
