Chapter 6 - The InheritanceRyan's father had owned far more than Ryan knew.

Land.
Investments.
Shares in several companies.
Nearly twelve million dollars.
But after his death, Ryan had been told the estate was drowning in debt.
Richard Vale had handled everything.
Ryan received the house and little else.
According to the documents beneath the cabin floor, millions had been diverted through shell companies.
One belonged to Richard.
Another belonged to Caroline.
Mara looked at Ryan.
“Your marriage may not have been an accident.”
Ryan remembered meeting Caroline.
A charity fundraiser.
She had approached him.
She had known his name.
At the time, he'd thought it was coincidence.
Now nothing felt accidental.
Then an officer found another photograph.
Natalie and Caroline.
Together.
Taken eight years ago.
Before Natalie disappeared.
Ryan stared at it.
“They knew each other.”
Mara nodded.
“And apparently much better than you realized.”
Ryan turned the photograph over.

A date had been written on the back.
It was the exact day Natalie disappeared.
