The chain was gone.
“Where's Grandpa's ring?”
Evan looked confused.
“Caroline took it.”
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
Caroline now possessed the authentication key tied to his father's trust documents.
But she still needed Ryan.
His biometric authorization was required.
That explained why she hadn't simply disappeared.
She was coming back.
Mara understood immediately.
“She'll contact you.”
She was right.
At midnight, Ryan's phone rang.
Caroline.
“Hello, husband.”
Ryan gripped the phone.
“Where are you?”
“Does it matter?”
“You imprisoned a child.”
Caroline laughed softly.
“You still don't understand anything.”
“Then explain it.”
“You think Natalie is innocent?”
Ryan looked across the room.
Natalie was listening.
Caroline continued.
“Ask her why your father really died.”
The line went dead.
Ryan slowly turned toward Natalie.
Her face had gone pale.
“What did she mean?”
