Chapter 11 - THE GOLDEN CAGE BROKEN

The mansion gradually emptied,
as the guests departed in hushed silence,
eager to share the scandalous news,
with the rest of high society.
The bright gala lights,
were finally turned off,
leaving only the soft,
dim lamps burning in the living room.
Evelyn sat on the large velvet sofa,
wrapped in a warm woolen blanket,
staring blankly into the fireplace,
watching the dancing flames.
The silence was deafening,
a stark contrast to the music,
and laughter that had filled the house,
just a few hours ago.
She felt completely empty,
as if her entire existence,
had been a beautiful lie,
a carefully constructed illusion.
Elena entered the room quietly,
carrying a cup of hot chamomile tea,
placing it gently on the table,
before her grieving mistress.
"Thank you,
Elena,"
Evelyn whispered,
her voice barely audible,
rough from hours of crying,
and emotional exhaustion.
"You don't have to thank me,
madam,"
Elena replied softly,
sitting on a small stool nearby,
refusing to leave her side.
Evelyn looked at the young girl,
realizing the immense bravery,
it took to do what she did,
risking her own safety.
"You could have been fired,"
Evelyn said,
"or worse,
Julian could have hurt you,
if he found out what you knew."
"I didn't care about that,"
Elena answered honestly,
looking directly into Evelyn's eyes,
"you saved my mother's life,
and I could not stand by,
and watch him take yours."
A tear rolled down Evelyn's cheek,
but this time,
it was not a tear of sadness,
but of deep gratitude,
and profound relief.
The golden cage she lived in,
the perfect marriage that trapped her,
was finally broken,
allowing her to see the truth.
She was alive,
thanks to the loyalty of a maid,
May you like
and she would not let that gift,
go to waste.
