Chapter 20 - THE DAWN OF FREEDOM

The jury returned with the verdict,
after only two hours of deliberation,
a swift consensus that surprised no one,
in the packed courtroom.
Julian stood up,
his hands trembling slightly,
as the judge prepared to read,
the final judgment of the court.
"We find the defendant,
Julian Vance,
guilty on all counts,"
the foreperson announced,
her voice ringing with clarity,
bringing an end to the long trial.
Guilty of grand financial fraud,
guilty of corporate embezzlement,
and guilty of attempted first-degree murder,
with no mitigating circumstances.
The judge sentenced him to life in prison,
without the possibility of parole,
ensuring he would spend his remaining days,
behind cold iron bars.
Julian collapsed into his chair,
burying his face in his hands,
finally realizing the magnitude of his failure,
and the ruin of his life.
Evelyn did not watch him leave,
she stood up,
took Elena’s hand,
and walked out of the courtroom,
stepping into the warm afternoon sunshine.
The air felt fresh and clean,
washing away the lingering filth,
of the past ten years of deception,
and fear.
A few weeks later,
Evelyn and Elena stood on the terrace,
of their new home by the sea,
watching the waves crash softly,
against the white sandy shore.
The sunset was a brilliant display of colors,
pinks,
oranges,
and purples painting the sky,
signaling the end of a beautiful day.
Evelyn raised a glass of fresh lemonade,
looking at Elena with a bright,
genuine smile,
her eyes sparkling with true happiness.
"Here’s to a wonderful evening,
Elena,"
she said softly,
repeating her old words,
but with a completely new meaning.
Elena raised her glass as well,
clinking it gently against Evelyn’s,
laughing softly under the twilight sky.
"To a wonderful evening,
Evelyn,"
Elena replied,
"and to a beautiful,
free life ahead."
They drank together,
embracing the peace of the present moment,
completely safe,
May you like
completely free,
at the dawn of their new beginning.
