Chapter 6 - WHISPERS AND WARNINGS

The crash of breaking porcelain,
echoed through the ballroom,
causing several guests to gasp,
and turn around in surprise.
For a brief moment,
Evelyn paused,
lowering her glass slightly,
looking towards the source of the noise,
distracted by the commotion.
Julian’s face darkened with anger,
frowning deeply at the interruption,
glaring at the clumsy staff member.
But Elena did not care about the mess,
she used the moment of confusion,
to push past the startled guests,
reaching the center of the room.
She was running out of time,
as Julian quickly recovered his composure,
turning back to Evelyn,
urging her to ignore the distraction.
"Drink,
my love,
before the wine gets warm,"
he urged softly,
his voice strained,
trying to force the glass back to her lips.
Evelyn lifted the glass once more,
her lips almost touching the rim,
ready to taste the liquid,
unaware of the lethal venom inside.
Elena saw the movement,
her heart stopping,
as she realized words would not be enough,
she needed physical action.
She threw herself forward,
reaching out her hand,
targeting the crystal glass,
with absolute determination.
The guests watched in utter shock,
as the young maid breached etiquette,
charging towards the host and hostess,
like a woman possessed.
Julian tried to block her,
stepping in front of his wife,
but he was too late,
Elena was faster,
driven by sheer desperation.
Her fingers made contact with the glass,
shattering the illusion of peace,
initiating the climax,
of this deadly game.
The red wine spilled,
flying through the air,
staining the white tablecloth,
like a splatter of fresh blood.
The glass fell to the floor,
shattering into a thousand pieces,
destroying the evidence,
or so Julian thought.
The room went dead silent,
the music stopped abruptly,
May you like
as everyone stared at the scene,
unable to comprehend what just happened.
