Chapter 5 - THE ARRIVAL OF SOCIETY

The elite guests continued to mingle,

unaware of the dark drama unfolding,

beneath the surface of the glamorous party.

Lord Harrington,

a wealthy investor,

was laughing loudly at a joke,

holding a glass of champagne,

praising Julian's hospitality.

Lady Beatrice,

known for her sharp tongue,

was admiring Evelyn's dress,

whispering compliments,

that felt unusually genuine.

The atmosphere was filled with luxury,

the scent of expensive perfumes,

the sound of clinking glasses,

and soft jazz music.

Evelyn played her part flawlessly,

glowing with artificial happiness,

though an underlying anxiety,

still tugged at her mind.

She kept looking for Julian,

wondering where he had gone,

feeling a strange emptiness,

whenever he left her side.

When she saw him approaching,

carrying a tray with two glasses,

her heart lifted,

believing her fears were foolish.

Julian smiled warmly at her,

his eyes locked onto hers,

masking the deadly intent,

that lay hidden beneath his gaze.

He handed her the poisoned glass,

his fingers brushing against hers,

a touch that felt ice-cold,

despite the warmth of the room.

"A special wine,

for my special wife,"

he said loudly,

attracting the attention of nearby guests,

who smiled at the romantic gesture.

Evelyn took the glass,

admiring the rich color of the wine,

thanking him with a sweet smile,

touched by his attention.

Elena was only a few yards away,

blocked by a group of talking guests,

struggling frantically to break through,

feeling panic consume her.

"Excuse me,

please let me through,"

she pleaded,

but her voice was drowned out,

by the loud chatter and music.

She saw Evelyn raising the glass,

bringing it closer to her lips,

seconds away from taking a sip,

seconds away from a painful death.

Elena knew she had to act,

she could not afford to be polite,

she had to break all rules,

to save a life.

She lunged forward,

knocking over a small table,

sending plates and glasses crashing,

May you like

creating a sudden,

loud distraction.
