Chapter 12 - SECRETS IN THE SAFE

The next morning brought a grey,
foggy dawn,
casting a somber light over the estate,
as the legal battle began.
Evelyn,
accompanied by her trusted lawyer,
Mr.
Marcus,
and Detective Vance,
entered Julian’s private study,
to search for further evidence.
The room felt cold and unwelcoming,
haunted by the memory of Julian's malice,
and his desperate financial schemes.
Mr.
Marcus pointed to a large painting,
hanging behind the mahogany desk,
suggesting there might be a hidden safe,
concealed behind the canvas.
Detective Vance moved the painting aside,
revealing a modern,
electronic wall safe,
requiring a combination code to open.
Evelyn approached the safe,
her mind racing,
trying to think of what numbers,
Julian would use for his secret lock.
She tried his birthday,
then her own,
but the red light flashed,
indicating an incorrect attempt,
denying them access.
Suddenly,
she remembered a date,
the date his failing business began,
the day he took out a massive loan,
from a notorious loan shark.
She entered the numbers carefully,
and with a soft click,
the safe door swung open,
revealing its dark contents.
Inside lay stacks of fake passports,
offshore bank account details,
and a secondary vial of the clear poison,
proving his absolute guilt.
But the most shocking discovery,
was a life insurance policy,
taken out in Evelyn's name,
just three months ago.
The policy was worth twenty million dollars,
with Julian listed,
as the sole beneficiary,
in the event of her accidental death.
"This is the smoking gun,"
Mr.
Marcus stated,
his face grim as he examined the document,
"this proves premeditation beyond any doubt."
Evelyn felt a wave of nausea,
realizing that her life had a price tag,
and her husband was eager to collect it,
without a second thought.
Julian didn't just want to escape debt,
he wanted to become fabulously wealthy,
May you like
at the expense of her life,
leaving her to rot.
